The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ondo State on Thursday endorsed Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa as its candidate for the November 16 governorship election in the State.
The endorsement ceremony took place at the state headquarters of the union in Akure, where the leadership of the union officially presented the Governor to members as the candidate to support.
The Chairman of the Ondo State NURTW, Ademola Odudu, expressed the union’s confidence in Governor Aiyedatiwa’s leadership, citing his achievements in road infrastructure development and his dedication to addressing the concerns of transport workers.
“We have seen firsthand the positive impact of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s leadership on our sector, his administration has not only improved our road networks but has also ensured the safety and prosperity of our members. We believe that his election into office come November 16 will bring even more development to Ondo State”, Odudu said.
The Chairman also addressed common misconceptions about the NURTW, asserting that the union is composed of responsible and law-abiding citizens, not thugs or rascals.
“We are a union of individuals committed to the progress of Ondo State. Our support for Governor Aiyedatiwa is a reflection of our shared vision for the state’s future,” he added.
Also, a national leader of NURTW, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC OLUOMO, lauded Governor Aiyedatiwa’s outstanding leadership, highlighting that his leadership qualities have garnered strong support from union members.
He urged all the drivers in the state to continue rallying support for the Governor’s election.
Responding, Governor Aiyedatiwa, who thanked the union for the endorsement, said that the vital role the NURTW plays in the state’s economy, particularly in enhancing transportation and ensuring smooth connectivity across communities, cannot be undermined.
The Governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to continuing its partnership with the NURTW to further develop the state’s infrastructure and improve the welfare of transport workers.
“I am truly honored by the support of this union, your contribution to our state’s development, especially in the transportation sector, is invaluable. My administration is committed to ensuring that the NURTW and its members continue to thrive in a conducive and secure environment.
“Our drivers are the eyes on the road, witnessing firsthand what happens. If you notice anyone or any group attempting to disrupt the peace we currently enjoy in the state, please report them to the appropriate authorities. This way, we can continue to maintain peace and harmony throughout Ondo State”, the Governor said.
The Governor also informed the union that his administration plans to include its members in the informal sector of the Health Insurance Scheme, which is set to begin on September 6.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Union Matters, Comrade Bola Taiwo, praised the NURTW for maintaining peace within their ranks and expressed his appreciation to the members for their cooperation with the leadership.
Those in attendance included the Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Tayo Oluwatuyi; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Prince Segun Omojuwa; Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Pastor Emmanuel Igbasan and APC State Chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin.
