In a move aimed at improving electricity supply and achieving energy independence, Ondo State Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has inaugurated a Committee to oversee the transition of regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the state government.
The Electricity Regulatory Transition Committee, chaired by Engr. Tunji Light Ariyomo, has been tasked with developing modalities to enhance electricity supply, ensure a smooth transfer of authority from federal institutions to the state, and promote local governance and control over electricity.
Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized the importance of the transition, stating that “having a substantial part of Ondo State in darkness is simply unacceptable.” He expressed confidence that the committee will help achieve a more efficient and locally controlled electricity regulatory market, leading to a more reliable and sustainable power supply for citizens.
The committee comprises experts in the energy sector, including Engr. Johnson Alabi, Mrs. Iyabo Adefemi, Engr. Olumayowa Ajumobi, and Engr. Stephen Bolawole, with Engr. Gbenga Akeju representing the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and a representative from the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to be nominated.
The transition is expected to streamline regulatory processes, enhance accountability, and ultimately lead to improvements in electricity supply and distribution within Ondo State. The committee will work closely with stakeholders, including NERC and the Benin Disco, to ensure a smooth and effective handover.
This milestone marks a significant step in Ondo State’s journey towards energy independence and improved public service delivery. With the inauguration of the Electricity Regulatory Transition Committee, the state is poised to take control of its energy future and provide better services to its citizens.
The committee is expected to submit its report and recommendations within a short timeframe, paving the way for a more efficient and sustainable electricity supply system in Ondo State.
