The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, on Tuesday defeated the Nigerian Society of Engineers’ football team by 2 goals to 1 in a novelty match as part of activities marking the engineering week.
The engineers started on a good note by scoring their first and only goal in the second minute of the match when the journalists were still looking for a pen to write their rhythm.
Minutes later, the engineers lost their spanners as the journalists took control of the match by writing the narratives and controlling the game, as the engineers danced to the tune of the pen-pushers.
The first half of the encounter, which was decided at the football pitch of Anglican Church secondary school, Alagbaka, Akure ended 1-1 before the journalists sealed the game with a powerful strike a few minutes to the end of regulation time.
Reacting to his side’s victory, the state NUJ chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, who was the captain of his side before being substituted, said he was not surprised with the score line as the pen-pushers’ football team are always prepared for any challenge.
In his remark, the NSE chairman, Stephen Bolawole, commended the NUJ football team for engaging the engineering practitioners and quality of football displayed by both sides.
According to him; “The game was very interesting even though we did not win as we would have wanted to be.
“It’s going to facilitate more bonding for both unions as well as helping us to look other areas where we can call on government to make investments that will improve the quality of lives of Nigerians,” he noted.
The engineering week continues, even as journalists deny them a victory that would have made their next activity exciting.
